Best Prompt Optimizer Tools, Compared (October 2026)

There is no single best prompt optimizer: the first-party optimizers from OpenAI and Google suit teams already on those platforms, free web rewriters suit one-off prompts, and the choice only narrows when you need batch runs, reusable templates, scoring or an API — each tool covers a different subset of those.

This page is written by the maker of one of the tools on it, so here is how it was kept honest. Every cell comes from the vendor's own pages, checked on October 10, 2026; where a vendor does not say something, the cell says "not stated" rather than guessing. VantagePrompt is one row, marked as ours, and it loses on several axes. The comparison covers prompt rewrite tools for individuals and small teams — not the LLMOps and evaluation platforms sold to AI engineering teams, which solve a different problem.

How were the prompt optimizers compared?

On the axes that separate one optimizer from another once the first rewrite looks fine: how it rewrites, whether it handles many prompts at once, whether it stores reusable templates, whether it scores the result, whether code can call it, and what it costs. PromptPerfect Alternatives explains why each of these matters; this page fills them in for named tools.

Two well-known options closed this year. PromptPerfect was discontinued after September 1, 2026, following Jina AI's acquisition by Elastic — see PromptPerfect Alternatives. Anthropic retired its experimental prompt generator and prompt improver APIs together with the Console Workbench on August 17, 2026. And OpenAI's dataset-backed optimizer goes with its Evals platform: read-only from October 31, shut down on November 30, 2026.

What does each tool do well, and where does it stop?

  • OpenAI prompt optimizer — best if you already work in the OpenAI dashboard: a chat interface that rewrites a prompt to OpenAI's current best practices. Its stronger mode, which optimizes against your graders and a dataset, is being shut down with the Evals platform on November 30, 2026. Its pages state no price.
  • Google prompt optimizer — the most rigorous option here for teams on Google Cloud: its data-driven mode tunes a system instruction against labelled examples and returns an evaluation score, and in that mode templates take variables, including image, video, audio and document inputs. It needs a Cloud project with IAM roles, its SDK is marked experimental, and the docs give no optimizer price. The docs now sit under Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform; older Vertex AI links redirect there.
  • promptoptimizer.tools — the lowest-friction option: free with no account, and a cheap Pro plan with a synced library, a template library and a browser extension (ChatGPT on the free tier; Claude, Gemini and others on Pro). One rewrite at a time; its pages mention no scoring and no public API, and its privacy page says free prompts are processed by DeepSeek.
  • Aiven Prompt Optimizer — the one built for cutting tokens, with a choice of compression strength from light to maximum. Free, and Aiven says prompts are not used to train models. Its page mentions no library or batch, and it promotes Aiven's managed agents.
  • TripleTen Prompt Optimizer — structures a text prompt with a framework matched to the task. TripleTen, a career-training site, lists it among its free tools; the page says nothing about accounts or data handling.
  • SiteGPT AI Prompt Optimizer — useful for seeing one prompt rewritten through a framework you choose, from ten. A side tool on a chatbot vendor's site, with no tool-specific terms for accounts or data.
  • Promplify — the only consumer tool here with a documented REST API, and cheap one-time credit packs. It calls itself a release candidate and warns that saved prompts may be erased in future updates; its privacy policy lists OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and DeepSeek as processors.
  • Prompt Optimizer (open source) — the most capable free option: iterative rewriting with evaluation, variables, an MCP server, and image generation prompts, as a hosted web app, desktop app, extension or Docker image. You bring your own model API keys, and its AGPL-3.0 licence requires you to share your source code if you distribute it or run it as a service for others.
  • VantagePrompt (ours) — built for repeated work: a structured rewrite, with a framework picked where the text use case fits one, a quality score on every run, batches of up to 20 prompts, templates with variables, and image, audio and video use cases with per-tool output. Where it loses is below.

Which prompt optimizer fits which situation?

If you need…Start with
An occasional one-off rewritepromptoptimizer.tools (free, no account) or Aiven (free). The first-party optimizer if you already use OpenAI's dashboard.
The same kind of prompt, many timesA tool with templates and batch: VantagePrompt, or Google's optimizer if you are on Google Cloud.
An optimizer your code can callGoogle's SDK, Promplify's REST API, or the open-source Prompt Optimizer's MCP server. VantagePrompt has no API.
Image, audio or video promptsVantagePrompt (per-tool output for each), or the open-source Prompt Optimizer for image generation. promptoptimizer.tools also has an Image AI mode.
A shared setup for a teamGoogle's optimizer inside your Cloud project, or VantagePrompt's team plan with seats and per-member quotas.
Evidence that the rewrite works on your taskGoogle's data-driven mode, with your own labelled examples, or OpenAI's dataset mode until it closes on November 30, 2026. The open-source tool compares test outputs side by side but states no scoring against a labelled dataset.

What do none of these prompt optimizers do well?

Four gaps run across the whole category, ours included.

  1. Proving the rewrite is better for your task. A rewrite that reads better is not shown to work better. Only optimizers that run against your own labelled examples measure that, and OpenAI's version of it closes on November 30. A built-in score — VantagePrompt's included — rates the prompt, not your outcome. How to Evaluate a Prompt covers checking it yourself.
  2. Saying where your text goes. Several of these tools state that they pass your prompt to a third-party model provider — VantagePrompt among them — and two name DeepSeek among their processors. For several others, the pages compared here state no data terms. Check before pasting anything confidential.
  3. Staying around. Two of the best-known options closed in 2026, a third mode closes in November, and one active tool warns it may erase saved prompts. Keep your prompts somewhere you control.
  4. Publishing what they cost. For two of the nine — OpenAI's and Google's — the pages compared here give no price at all, and two more are only labelled free, with no terms.

Where does VantagePrompt lose?

On access and openness. There is no public API, so it cannot sit inside your own pipeline — Google, Promplify and the open-source tool can. There is no browser extension, so it is a page you go to rather than something layered over your chat window, which promptoptimizer.tools does. It is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. Even the free plan needs an account, and it is limited to 25 credits a month on economy models. Where it is stronger is in the repeated work after the first rewrite: batches, templates with variables, a score on every run, and image, audio and video use cases. See plans and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free prompt optimizer?
For a one-off rewrite, promptoptimizer.tools is free with no account and Aiven's optimizer is free. If you can bring your own model API keys, the open-source Prompt Optimizer on GitHub — hosted online or self-hosted — is the most capable free option. OpenAI and Google offer first-party optimizers to users of their platforms, though neither states a price for them.
Is PromptPerfect still available?
No. PromptPerfect was discontinued after September 1, 2026, following Jina AI's acquisition by Elastic in October 2025.
Does Anthropic have a prompt optimizer?
Not any more as a separate tool. Anthropic retired its experimental prompt generator, prompt improver and templatizer APIs together with the Console Workbench on August 17, 2026; the Workbench was replaced by a playground.
Which prompt optimizer has an API?
Of the tools compared here, Google's prompt optimizer has an SDK (marked experimental), Promplify has a REST API, and the open-source Prompt Optimizer runs an MCP server. OpenAI's pages do not state an API for its optimizer, and VantagePrompt has none.
Do prompt optimizers actually improve results?
A rewrite usually adds structure a rough prompt lacks, but only an optimizer that tests against your own labelled examples measures whether results improve on your task. Google's data-driven mode does that, as does OpenAI's dataset mode until November 30, 2026; most consumer tools rewrite without measuring. Test the rewrite on your own inputs before relying on it.
